Flu Season Alert: Why Parents Must Act Now to Better Protect Their Children

Every year, Singapore sees a rise in influenza cases due to our climate and high population density. Flu, caused by the influenza virus, is not merely a severe cold—it can lead to serious complications, especially in young children. If your child has an underlying medical condition—such as asthma, diabetes, or a compromised immune system—the stakes are even higher.

According to the Ministry of Health, influenza viruses in Singapore typically include circulating strains of Influenza A (such as H1N1 and H3N2) and Influenza B. In recent seasons, the H3N2 strain has been particularly concerning, contributing to higher infection rates among children and the elderly.

While Singapore generally maintains a relatively low pediatric flu mortality rate, child-related influenza deaths do occur. A 2022 MOH report noted that a handful of influenza-associated pediatric deaths happen annually—often linked to complications such as pneumonia. These figures highlight how crucial it is for parents to stay vigilant, especially during peak flu periods. By consulting healthcare professionals about vaccinations, maintaining consistent treatment plans, and fostering rigorous hygiene habits, you’ll be taking key steps to safeguard your child’s well-being.

Below are seven practical steps you can take to protect your little ones—even in the bustling environment of preschool.

Consult Your Pediatrician about Vaccinations

Vaccinations remain one of the most effective lines of defence against the flu—especially for children with pre-existing conditions. Updated flu shots often target the strains most prevalent in a given year, including H3N2. Schedule a consultation with your pediatrician to determine which vaccine is most suitable for your child’s condition. Children with chronic illnesses typically benefit significantly from getting vaccinated, as it can reduce the severity of flu symptoms and help avoid complications such as pneumonia.

Reinforce Rigorous Hand Hygiene

Even with vaccinations, good hygiene practices are crucial. The flu virus can spread quickly through hand-to-face contact, so teach your child to wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If your child has limited mobility or finds frequent handwashing difficult, keep alcohol-based hand sanitisers (with at least 60% alcohol) nearby. Emphasise hand hygiene before meals, after using the restroom, and whenever they’ve been around sick classmates or relatives.

Maintain a Consistent Medication and Treatment Plan

Children with chronic conditions often follow specific treatment regimens—whether it’s inhalers for asthma, insulin for diabetes, or immunosuppressants for autoimmune disorders. Keep these treatments consistent during flu season, and promptly inform your child’s healthcare provider of any changes in symptoms. Flu-like signs—such as fever, cough, or fatigue—could exacerbate existing health issues. By adhering to a regular medication schedule, you can help stabilise your child’s condition and reduce the risk of complications.

Prioritise a Balanced Lifestyle

A balanced lifestyle goes beyond nutrition (though that’s important too!). Adequate rest is critical for immune function; aim for 10–12 hours of sleep each night for younger children. Incorporate gentle, low-impact exercise—such as short walks or basic stretching—if your child’s condition permits. Regular activity can improve circulation, enhance lung capacity (beneficial for asthma sufferers), and relieve stress, which in turn supports a stronger immune response.

Communicate with Schools and Caregivers

When your child is preschool, open communication with teachers and caregivers is vital. Share information about your child’s condition and any specific warning signs they should watch for. It is important that the facility has strict cleaning protocols, especially during flu season, and the presence of a contingency plan for dealing with sick children on-site. Being transparent ensures that your child’s caregivers can respond quickly if any flu symptoms develop, reducing the chance of severe complications.

Children’s temperature are monitored twice daily to ensure that they don’t have a temperature. If they are unwell, parents are immediately notified via the Little Lives communication app and are advised to pick their child up. Teachers also monitor children throughout the day and we make it a point to let them know if they develop coughs, rashes or look unwell during the school day. This keeps parents assured at work that their child is well taken cared of.

We have a dedicated sick bay also to care for children when they are unwell whilst waiting for their parents / caregiver to pick them up.

Know the Early Warning Signs

For children with underlying conditions, early detection of the flu can be lifesaving. Familiarise yourself with warning signs such as high fever, persistent cough, rapid breathing, or pronounced fatigue. If your child has respiratory issues such as asthma, monitor for wheezing or shortness of breath. In cases of diabetes, watch for abnormal blood sugar fluctuations. Seek medical attention promptly if symptoms worsen or don’t improve within a few days. Early antiviral treatments can shorten illness duration and prevent severe outcomes.

Practice Proactive Social Distancing

While complete isolation isn’t feasible—or healthy—for most children, strategic social distancing can help. During peak flu periods, you might limit time spent in large groups or crowded indoor spaces. Encourage small playdates in well-ventilated areas instead of big gatherings. If someone in your home or extended circle shows flu-like symptoms, take extra precautions—wear masks, increase handwashing, and consider rescheduling visits until everyone has recovered.
